We have a wide range of courses across our design, manufacturing and engineering management disciplines at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We also have a number of research opportunities.

Our students

Design, Manufacturing & Engineering Management students enjoy a broad-based education with the opportunity to work with colleagues from different departments across the Faculty of Engineering and the university.

Students also have the opportunity to work with our industry and international partners.

Our facilities

Our department is well equipped with state-of-the-art tools to help design, prototype, manufacture and perform research on a broad range of items.

We use our skills and equipment on a number of commercial and research projects.

We have various workshops to assist us in this work, including:

  • rapid prototyping
  • virtual prototyping
  • reverse engineering
  • mechatronics labs

We have one of the UK’s only digital design suites to combine virtual and physical design and prototyping.

The department itself was refurbished in 2014 and offers modern teaching, studying and research facilities featuring a broad range of IT facilities, group study areas and studio space.

Our people

Our staff have a wealth of national and international practical and teaching experience. High profile academic staff include:

  • Professor Bill Ion: a founding director of Strathclyde’s Advanced Forming Research Centre and winner of the UK-wide KTP Academic Ambassador award, from the Technology Strategy Board, for championing partnership programmes with industry
  • Professor Yi Qin: Director of the Centre for Precision Manufacturing and international leading expert in Micro-Manufacturing and Forming technology

The David Cunningham Quality of Life Award

The David Cunningham Quality of Life Award is an award honouring David Cunningham, our department's highly respected Director of Operations. David sadly died on Saturday 8 October 2016, at the age of 47, following a yearlong battle with brain cancer. Find out more.
