HumanitiesModern languages

At Strathclyde, modern languages are taught in a friendly environment where you’ll have the chance to become a fluent linguist, engage with other cultures and even study abroad as part of your degree.

Undergraduate study

French

French is a major international language. It's the first language of more than 100 million people across the world, while more than 60 million people speak French as a second language.

French can be combined with a wide variety of subjects, such as: Law, Business (IBML), History, English and, of course other languages.

Spanish

Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. If you can speak Spanish, you can communicate with the 528 million people across the world who also speak Spanish.

You can combine Spanish at Strathclyde with other modern languages or subjects including business, law and marketing. In addition to language skills, you'll learn about Spanish and Latin American literature, history, film and culture, delivered by teaching staff who specialise in these subjects.

Awards and scholarships

There are a number of opportunities to receive awards available to Modern Languages students at Strathclyde.

The University is committed to promoting friendly relations between students of Scotland, France and Spain. Stevenson Exchange Scholarships, offered in partnership with the University of Glasgow, are open to students going to France and Spain for their compulsory year abroad in Year 4.

Candidates must propose a project related to the promotion of Scotland and Scottish culture abroad. The first step involves an interview in French or Spanish, before a second and final interview at the University of Glasgow. After that, candidates will receive funding for their projects. Upon completion, they will be required to write a report.

The process is highly competitive and only three candidates can be put forward per year. For more information, please contact Ms Noémie Jollet on noemie.jollet@strath.ac.uk for French and Ms Victoria Reina-Gil victoria.reina-gil@strath.ac.uk for Spanish.
