Tania Nascimento Wins Paid Doctoral Internship

One of CLCJ's doctoral researchers has won a paid Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences Internship.

In a very competitive process, Tania Nascimento secured the three-month position by creating her own research project which will enhance her skill-set, benefit her ‘industry partner’, as well as wider society.

Tania will lead a small study identifying the opportunities and challenges likely to be faced by Third Sector organisations in meeting the Scottish Government’s commitment to make Restorative Justice practices widely available in Scotland by 2023.

She will study and report on the work of Restorative Solutions, a leading third sector provider of restorative practices, as a case study.

Commenting on her success Tania said:

I’m thrilled that my project proposal won the SGSSS student-led competition and look forward to using my skills to identify the challenges faced by organisations like Restorative Solutions.

While she undertakes her internship work on Tania’s PhD will be suspended. After she completes her report about her internship, Tania will return to her PhD research.

Tania’s PhD, which is supervised by Prof Cyrus Tata and Dr Saskia Vermeylen, investigates the emotional dynamics of Restorative Justice conferences.

Restorative Justice brings those harmed by crime or conflict and those responsible for the harm into communication, enabling everyone affected by a particular incident to play a part in repairing the harm and finding a positive way forward. It requires highly skilled and sensitive facilitation.

There is growing interest and demand for Restorative Justice and the Scottish Government is committed to making restorative practices ‘widely available’ by 2023.

Tania Nascimento is a graduate of the LLM/MSc in Criminal Justice & Penal Change.
