Widening AccessOptions for further study

So you've been bitten by the study bug and have decided that an undergraduate degree isn't enough - you want to keep on studying in even more depth! The next stage after undergraduate study is known as 'postgraduate' study.

You'll need to decide which course you want to undertake and also research any funding implications to determine how you'll be able to finance your studies.

Choosing a course

There are lots of things to consider:

• What kind of course and mode of study are you interested in - research/taught, PgDip/MSc, full time/part-time/distance-learning?
• Why do you want to undertake further study - qualification into a particular profession (teaching, for example), specialise further, add a new skill?
• How will you finance it - loan/bursary/studentship?

The options can seem overwhelming, so it is important to do your research and have a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Speak to academic staff, the Careers Service, those involved with any postgraduate programme that you are interested in. Don't be afraid to ask questions. And the earlier, the better!

Funding for Postgraduate Courses

Paying for postgraduate courses is often a bit more complex than for undergraduate degrees. Funding is often available, however, so don't be put off by the prospect! It often depends on your particular circumstances and the course that you are hoping to study. Again, the important thing is to research postgraduate funding opportunities as early as you can.
