The Facility currently offers 3 Advanced Techniques in Mass Spectrometry

  • MALDI-ToF for the analysis of large molecules up to 500 KDa
  • UPLC-Orbi-Trap for high resolution Mass Spectrometry analysis with 4 decimal point accuracy
  • ICP-MS for the analysis of metal ions on the ppb concentration scale

A Training Course can be requested for MALDI-ToF to understand sample preparations and to run the instrument by researchers at the University of Strathclyde.

Exactive Orbi-Trap (HRMS)

Orbi-Trap Mass Spectrometer with Vanquish UPLC

The Thermo-Fisher Scientific Exactive Plus Orbi-Trap Mass Spectrometer with Vanquish UPLC is for analysis of novel compounds ready for research publication and detection of molecules in biological mixtures at pmol concentration scales. This instrument is able to measure masses at 4 decimal point accuracy, so is able to differientiate isotopes ratios in molecules: useful for isotope labeling.

MALDI-ToF

Shimadzu MALDI TOF Mass Spectrometer

MALDI-ToF is a Mass Spectrometry technique for the analysis of molecules of high molecular mass above 2,000 Da such as peptide, proteins and antibodies. This method is a go to for samples struggling with ionisation via convention techniques such as electronspray ionisation as well as molecules that cannot dissolve in peek tubing compatible solvents.

The Agilent ICP-Mass Spectrometer is for the detection of elemental composition at ppb concentration scales primarily for metals. This is currently heavily used for the analysis of metal contaminates in environmental samples.
