Bio:
Dr Mohamed Elawady is a teaching fellow in the department of computer and information sciences at the University of Strathclyde. He received his joint Master of Science degree in computer vision and robotics from the following universities under the EU Erasmus Mundus programme: Heriot-Watt University (UK), University of Burgundy (France), Girona University (Spain), and his PhD in computer vision from Lyon University (France).

Prior to joining academia at University of Stirling and subsequently University of Strathclyde, Dr Elawady worked in industry as a computer vision researcher in retail sector, where he led successful proof-of-concept projects using deep learning with technology partners such as Pricer and Metralabs and retail clients including Carrefour and MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group.

Dr Elawady has published widely cited research in leading computer vision venues, including ICCV, ACVIS, CAIP and VCIP. His work spans symmetry detection, breast ultrasound segmentation, media security and learning-based compression, with a strong emphasis on principled image representation and analysis. He served as Co-Investigator on an industry-funded project in computer vision for food waste management in collaboration with Falcon Foodservice Equipment. He also contributes to the community as a regular reviewer for leading journals and international conferences in computer vision. His research impact is exemplified by achieving first place in the ICCV 2017 international symmetry detection competition.

Dr Elawady welcomes applications from outstanding candidates interested in PhD, MSc and Honours research projects. Prospective students are encouraged to get in touch to discuss potential topics and collaborations. In the primary supervisor section of PGR applications, his name may appear as Dr Mohamed Soliman.
