Speak up 2023, debate competition in French
Lefever, Joan-Emilie (Principal Investigator) Noel-Claassen, Aurelie (Principal Investigator) Piochaud-Prevost, Lucie (Academic)
Revival post pandemic of the competition organised by the Alliance Française with a team from Glasgow University and a team from Strathclyde University. The students prepare 4 questions in advance and discover on the night if they will argue in favour or against. The debate took place in March during the Francophone cultural celebration week.
The relaunch of this event, which had to happen over a short period of time, was made possible by Emilie Perez, cultural coordinator of the Alliance Francaise, Ms Noel-Claassen from the University of Glasgow and myself, event coordinator for Strathclyde. My colleague, Ms Piochaud-Prevost, and I noted how well students performed and how well students in 2nd year and in Honours collaborated.

Living Languages 2023
Lefever, Joan-Emilie (Principal Investigator) Mowe, Richard (Visiting Academic) Davidson, Sylvia (Visiting Academic) Gooroochurn, Sheena (Visiting Academic) Talbot, George (Visiting Academic)
This year sees the relaunch of the Living languages events, a project that I reinvigorated after the Covid pandemic. Guests who value languages are invited for special evening Q&A events with Strathclyde language students and secondary school pupils invited by SCILT (Scotland’s National Centre for Languages). I invited Richard Mowe, director of the French and Italian film festivals UK and Sylvia Davidson, Translator and Short film curator of the French film festival UK for a Q&A event in January 2023. For February 2023, I invited 3 ex Language Strathclyde students for a special alumni, ae night. Previous Living Languages events proved very successful allowing students to broaden their career prospects and understand better how languages will prove important to them long after they leave university.

Speak Up, debate competition in French
Lefever, Joan-Emilie (Principal Investigator) Kerr, Greg (Co-investigator)
Competition organised by the Alliance Française with a team from Glasgow University and a team from Strathclyde University. The students prepare 4 questions in advance and discover on the night if they will argue in favour or against. The debate takes place in November during the French film festival.
I was the coordinator for Strathclyde and twice led our team to victory over the Glasgow Uni team in 2017 and 2019. Win or lose, students said how great the experience was and how different it was to speaking in class.
