As an alternative to current additive manufacturing (AM) techniques, Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) is a solid-state process that has been recently developed by Meld Manufacturing Co. This process does not require melting or remelting of the feedstock, which is a challenge in fusion AM processes. In this research work, we study the feasibility of fabricating aluminium and titanium components with different geometries using the AFSD process.

Immediate benefits of this concept are:

i) Reduce the buy-to-fly ratio of components such as those used in the aerospace industry.
ii) Reduce the amount of wasted material.
iii) Recycling of metal waste for feedstock material (e.g. machining scrap)
