Sustainable Strathclyde blogGuest blog: Volunteering – doing good, feeling good

28 February 2023

Over two days in February, a group of 12 Strath Volunteers joined The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) to plant trees at Cathkin Braes. The aim of this was helping Glasgow fulfil its climate emergency commitments to make homes for nature. Our group was made up of two Strath Union staff and ten students from a range of degree programmes and backgrounds. Our common goal was wanting to do a little good and feel the benefits of being out in nature. It was a fantastic day. Between us, we were able to plant over 500 trees, which will provide a wealth of food and shelter to local wildlife for many years to come. As our friends at TCV explained, trees are one of nature’s true multitaskers. As well as absorbing carbon dioxide, they also help alleviate flooding and soften the urban landscape.

This project will have huge long-term benefits. But, we also felt the immediate benefits of getting involved and taking action in our local community. We learned new skills (some of us perfected the T-cut digging technique!) The physical activity, alongside spending most of the day in the fresh air, surrounded by beautiful green space and a stunning view across Glasgow, gave us all a real boost. There was time for plenty of tea, chat and biscuits to keep us going! The feedback from all of the volunteers, staff, students and TCV team was incredibly positive. We’ll definitely be working on more projects together in the coming months.

Find the right opportunity for you

At Strath Union, we’re committed to connecting students to the local community and greenspaces that mean so much to us all. Volunteering is a fantastic way to make a real difference, boost your own wellbeing and learn new skills for the future. The University of Strathclyde also allows staff to take up to two days of paid leave per year to participate in approved volunteering opportunities. Strathclyde students and staff can search StrathUnion’s latest volunteering opportunities, including a range of sustainability projects online. Email Alison.McNaughton@strath.ac.uk if you have any questions about how you can get involved in volunteering at Strathclyde.

You’ll also find The Conservation Volunteers along with a range of other wonderful local organisations, University services and the Strath Union Opportunities team at our upcoming Volunteering and Opportunities Fair, Thursday 23 March 11am-2pm, at Strath Union.
