Postgraduate study

We offer a range of postgraduate study options, including Masters programmes and research degrees (PhD/MPhil/MRes). We offer several taught postgraduate programmes, with different options aimed at students from a variety of backgrounds, and with different options for full-time, part-time and online study. Our programmes blend academic and experiential learning, and a common feature across all programmes is a substantive project which gives the students an opportunity to apply their learning in practice, often with external organisations. Our programmes are continually reviewed to ensure that we deliver useful learning, and we are aided in this by our industrial advisory board, whose members are experts operating in their respective fields.

The programme aims to realise your potential so that you can immediately play an effective role in providing model-based support to managers to help them make better decisions at a strategic level.

Students will develop an understanding of key quantitative business analysis methods in addition to being introduced to models used to support the development of strategy for organisations and enable the monitoring and measurement of strategic processes. Key consulting skills will also be developed in order to effectively support management.

Although some quantitative analytical tools are taught and used during the course, only basic mathematical knowledge is necessary before starting the course. Many students in this course have first degrees in business, economics, engineering and the social sciences, but students from other backgrounds are also accepted as well.

A vital component of this programme is the apprenticeship scheme, which starts mid-January. Through this you will spend three weeks working full-time on a small analytical project, often embedded in the analytical function of an external host organisation. The apprenticeship is concluded with all students presenting their work to the department during the third week of the second semester.

Our MSc in data analytics is designed to create rounded data analytics problem-solvers.

This course focuses on the uses of data analytics techniques within business contexts, making informed decisions about appropriate technology to extract knowledge from data and understanding the theoretical principles by which such technology operates.

You'll gain a comprehensive skill set that will enable you to work in a variety of sectors using a blended learning approach that combines theory, intensive practice and industrial engagement.

Strathclyde's MSc in data analytics is unique by bringing together essential skills from three departments, Management Science, Mathematics & Statistics, and Computer & Information Sciences (CIS), in order to address the needs of a fast-growing industry.

This collaboration avoids the narrow interpretation of this subject offered by competitor institutions and presents significant opportunities for businesses to recruit data analytics experts with a high-level expertise and knowledge. Many students have first degrees in mathematics, natural sciences, engineering or economics/finance, but students from other backgrounds are also accepted.
