Law postgraduate studentsAlphaeus Ngonga, LLM Global Environmental Law & Governance, Malawi

Tell us a little bit about your background…
My name is Alphaeus Ngonga and I am from Malawi. I hold an honours degree in law and business. I have just completed my LLM in Global Environmental Law and Governance at University of Strathclyde (Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law and Governance). I worked in the financial sector before coming to Scotland.

Why did you decide to study Global Environmental Law & Governance at the university?
I have always wanted to study climate change and environment law with specific interest in human rights and the environment as human beings depend on the environment that they live and any degraded environment has detrimental effect on their standards of living. Therefore, there is a need for adequate environmental legal framework.

What advice would you give to someone considering studying your course?
Global Environmental Law and Governance is one of the best courses that is worth exploring as it focuses on the international aspects of environmental law and it has a variety of study subject areas tailored to meet your specific area (s) of interest.

Do you have a highlight from your time at university?
My time at SCELG was interesting. The class had students from different countries and it was worth learning and understanding their respective values. Staff were amazing and helpful. It was also a year of excellence as the centre organised the VI Strathclyde Postgraduate Colloquium on Environmental law and they also hosted the 16th Annual Colloquium IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. These events were beneficial as I learned a lot from guest speakers on emerging issues in environmental law.

Where are you working now?
I am currently working with Citizens Advice Bureau as a Tribunal Coordinator pending my graduation.

What is the best part of your job?
Tribunal representation is the best part of the role for me.

How did your time at Strathclyde help prepare you for this role?
I have gained more confidence since undertaking the programme. It is an area that is contrary to what I studied at Strathclyde.

What has been your most memorable moment from your career so far?
Being able to study something that I have always wanted. It is my milestone.

What are your ambitions for the future?
To do a PhD in Environmental law should there be opportunities

Any final points or words of wisdom?
If anyone wants to achieve his/her dreams in environmental law, SCELG is the place.
