LLM Construction LawAninda Mitra, India

Tell us a little bit about your background...
I am an Indian from Calcutta. I graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from my home city in 1993 and have been working overseas in Nigeria for a construction company before coming to Strathclyde for my Masters.

What inspired you to study your subject?
During my professional career, I have always found civil engineering contracts interesting. The works of the late Max Abrahamson have inspired me to specialise in this subject.

Why did you choose to continue studying for your Masters at the University of Strathclyde?
University of Strathclyde has a good reputation among superior universities in the UK. Furthermore, the university is among the first five in the world to offer this specific qualification.

Tell us about the format of the programme. What were you doing week-to-week?
The first semester was for four months; three subjects; around 26 classes; two hours each, and exams. The second semester was for another four months; three subjects; 19 classes; two hours each, and exams. The third semester was for three months; followed by the dissertation.

What were the most enjoyable parts of your degree?
New knowledge, expert teaching with care, guidance whenever required, library facilities, and exceptional time management. I must mention specially about three senior teachers who were incomparable - Professor Brandon Nolan, Dr. Mel Kenny, and Dr. Ian Trussel.

What would be your advice for people considering taking this course?
Anyone who is interested to join this course must have at least 5 years’ experience on Civil Engineering Contracts to understand the subject better and participate in class discussions. Most of the professors in the core subject are top professionals (that is how it should be!).

What have been the main challenges studying at postgraduate level?
For me to get back with academics after 27 years is not so simple, but the staff at Strathclyde are very supportive and helping me along my journey.

How has your scholarship supported your studies?
The news of my scholarship provided me a moral boost in November 2019. Additionally, this has provided substantial leverage to my expenditure for the entire course.

What do you think of the support available?
First, the library support has been wonderful. Second, the administrative staff during admission and during ongoing studies have been extremely cooperative.

Tell us about your new role and what your job is like?
I am a Senior Contract Specialist. This is an advisory role on my previous experience reinforced by the Masters.

How do you feel your degree helped prepare you for this role?
Brilliant diverse insight into Contract Management, and thorough knowledge of legal domains. I can successfully debate with peers due to this qualification. Credit should be shared with the University of Strathclyde.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering working in a similar role to yours?
Without Construction Law knowledge, a civil engineer's experience as a Contracts Specialist is incomplete.
