Digital StrategyTheme 5: Enhancing research & knowledge exchange

Digital technology and skills are increasingly important in the delivery of high-quality research and knowledge exchange. We will invest in the digital technology to underpin research and ensure that Strathclyde strengthens its position as a leading research-intensive university.  We will support this position by carrying out research into future digital technologies and their implications.

We will support knowledge exchange through our digital signposting and community initiatives and also by developing systems to enable the collaborative activities of Strathclyde and its partners.

We will build a community of practice that enables colleagues to develop their research computing skills and practice and ensure that this knowledge is passed on to students at all levels.

5.1: Research Computing Infrastructure

Our digital infrastructure supports the continued development of our research computing capability.

We will achieve this by:

  • developing and enhancing our high-performance computing facility;
  • facilitating access to research computing for the wider Strathclyde community;
  • maximising the opportunities of new technologies (quantum, optical computing) to enhance our research computing capability;
  • working with industry to research and develop new state of the art digital solutions;
  • meeting the cyber security Trusted Access requirements.

5.2: Digitally enabled research

We use digital technologies and resources to provide the best possible environment for our researchers.

We will achieve this by:

  • making digital content and assets readily available online;
  • digitising our archives to enable wider accessibility;
  • increasing our capability to facilitate more complex calculations and modelling;
  • facilitating the adoption of computer modelling AR & VR alongside and to enhance physical experiments;
  • encouraging collaborative research initiatives by providing digital working models.

5.3: Facilitating research growth

We use digital technologies to provide a high-quality research grant lifecycle framework.

We will achieve this by:

  • making it easy for our researchers to identify potential research opportunities;
  • providing effective grant management and reporting systems;
  • providing the appropriate Open Access infrastructure;
  • facilitating the amalgamation of information for REF through enhanced systems and processes;
  • providing a high quality and secure research collaboration framework.

5.4: Skills development for students and staff

We are committed to the development of our staff and students’ research computing skills.

We will achieve this by:

  • providing formal training for students at appropriate points in the learning journey;
  • providing continual and consistent access to learning opportunities for staff;
  • providing opportunities for the practical application of learning in a supportive and safe environment;
  • providing access to new digital technologies and methodologies to support research;
  • developing a Community of Practice that offers a source of expertise and knowledge to help others benefit from our research computing capability.
