MSc Advanced BiochemistryLuke Nicholson

What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?

Having completed an undergraduate degree in pure chemistry, I wanted to specialise in a field I had a greater interest for. The additional qualification of a masters degree presents more future opportunities for work or study.

How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?

Having looked at my different options, I went with Strathclyde because of its Biomedical Science Department ranking, as well as the location of Glasgow being relevant to my goal of entering the bioscience startup ecosystem.

What do you like about your course and Strathclyde?

I thoroughly enjoy the social atmosphere of Strathclyde; both the union and strath sport are very welcoming and full of friendly individuals. My course has had several key modules such as ‘entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialisation’, that were not only unique but thought provoking for my particular career path.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills have you developed whilst studying the course?

Having undertaken the optional module titled ‘In Vivo Biology’, I gained specialist animal handling skills along with a certificate allowing me to apply for a PIL license, which may prove useful in future endeavours.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

My end career goal is to own and manage my own bioscience enterprise, conducting research into possible new drugs and treatments for a variety of diseases. The previously mentioned entrepreneurship module, as well as the Strathclyde Inspire programme have both been very useful in directing me towards my goal and may still prove useful in future.

How have you found your time living in Glasgow and what's your favourite thing about the city?

Despite having only been here for approximately 6 months, I have already begun to see why so many end up staying here. A personal favourite spot of mine has to be the Barras markets, an amazing place to spend a Sunday morning with plenty of interesting stalls to see. The Glasgow Cathedral and Necropolis being located a 5-minute walk from Strathclyde library are an excellent place to go for a walk provided the notorious Glasgow weather permits it.

Have you managed to explore anywhere outside of Glasgow?

Unfortunately, due to the intensity of my course I haven’t had much opportunity to explore Scotland besides the odd trip to Edinburgh. I would love to have explored more of the highlands and lochs, however having grown up just across the border I have still seen plenty of Scotland’s beauty before.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study in Glasgow at Strathclyde?

The University offers a vibrant and diverse academic environment with top-notch facilities and an impressive range of courses to choose from.
