Satellite Applications (with Data Science) (MSc)Karim Garad

Karim, from Egypt, is studying an MSc in Satellite Applications (with Data Science). After completing his undergraduate degree, Karim successfully applied for a UK Space Agency Firesat International Partnership Programme Scholarship for the Satellite Applications course. Below, he talks about what he enjoys most about Strathclyde and Glasgow and what he hopes to do after his studies.

How did you find out about the scholarship opportunity to come and study at Strathclyde?

I did my Bachelor's Degree in Aero-Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde. My final year project was related to satellite applications and I enjoyed every bit of it since I am passionate about space. When I learnt of the new course in Satellite Applications and the availability of a scholarship, I was intrigued by it because it is the field I would like to have a career in, and I knew I can achieve great things and explore my ideas freely during it.

Was it easy to apply for the scholarship?

Application to the scholarship was very simple and straightforward, it can be done in less than an hour! The ease of application definitely encouraged me even more to apply.

How did you feel when you found out you’d be coming to study at Strathclyde?

I was delighted since Strathclyde University is one of the best universities in Scotland and the UK. Having the opportunity to study a brand new course I am passionate about with contribution from professionals in the field made it even better.

Did you study in your home country before coming to Strathclyde? If so, what differences have you found?

I did my BEng in Strathclyde, but I did my A-Levels in the UAE. The major difference was in the culture and traditions that I have not experienced before, and of course the weather. I settled in quite quickly though since people here are very helpful and take it upon themselves to make you feel at home.

How are you enjoying your course so far?

I am very pleased with the course. Lecturers allow us to explore our ideas in coursework which motivates me to learn about new technology and be innovative.

What do you enjoy most about Strathclyde and Glasgow?

People in Glasgow are wonderful, helpful, and friendly. So are the staff at Strathclyde. Many times during my BEng I needed assistance which staff were very keen to do.

Glasgow is very rich culturally and historically. No matter what your hobbies or interests are you will find a place in Glasgow that you will feel was meant for you.

The city is full of beautiful architecture and public parks that I enjoy very much.

What do you hope to do when you’ve completed your course?

I hope to integrate new technology in satellites that will make them work even better in the future and make a change in the world!
