Service provided

Environmental microbiology (with Biological Containment Level 2 facilities).

Description

Environmental microbiology is an important aspect of environmental engineering. We use laboratory studies to quantify how microbes interact and develop as a community; pathogen mobility in the environment; links between contamination and antimicrobial resistance in the environment; and many other projects.

Our work translates ecology principles to an engineering setting.

Routine research services

  • biological assessment of soil, sediment & aquatic ecosystems
  • phytoplankton/algae surveys & identification
  • aseptic isolation & culture
  • community structure/function determinations
  • metabolic & biochemical assays
  • molecular & microbiological techniques (DNA/RNA analyses)

Recent contracts & projects

  • biological indicators of environmental change
  • eco-toxicological assessment of contaminant exposure
  • bio-remediation & bio-restoration of aquatic & terrestrial ecosystems
  • microbiological community stability in engineered biological reactors
  • antibiotic/antimicrobial resistance in the environment
  • antimicrobial susceptibility assays
  • pathogen detection & fate
