International Human Rights Day

10th December 2019

On 10th December 2019, the Centre for the Study of Human Rights Law hosted an event to mark International Human Rights Day.

Dr Elaine Webster provided an update on initiatives underway on behalf of the Centre and Professor Alan Miller, recently appointed Professor of Practice, delivered a presentation. We were also delighted to welcome Professor Nicole Busby, recently appointed Professor of Human Rights, Equality and Justice at Glasgow School of Law.

Both discussed their new roles and collaborative plans around the National Task Force for Human Rights Leadership, which is taking forward the recommendations of the First Minister’s Advisory Group on Human Rights Leadership. The key challenges for the National Task Force are, firstly, to help prepare through a participative process a Bill which will for the first time put in a single place the rights belonging to everyone in Scotland, including incorporating internationally recognised rights, and secondly, to prepare a roadmap for the capacity-building essential for the effective implementation of this Bill. Professor Miller has been appointed by the First Minister as the Independent Co-Chair of the National Task Force and Professor Busby has been appointed as the Chair of its Academic Advisory Panel, of which Dr Webster is a member.

The event provided an opportunity to discuss how our academic community could contribute in a collaborative way to this leadership initiative, whilst marking International Human Rights Day.
