Personal statement

I am a Knowledge Exchange Fellow in the Power Networks Demonstration centre. I lead the PNDC’s Decarbonisation of Transport area, which includes building on and expanding our electrical smart grid research into whole energy systems research. My role involves outreach and development of a new set of partners for PNDC, road mapping of strategic research and innovation needs, recruitment of new PNDC team members, building relationships with academics across the University, development of a pipeline of proposals and research concepts, securing funding, and delivering a wide portfolio of knowledge exchange projects across energy and transport with industry partners.

Projects

Power and Communications Emulator for EV Charging Testing
Sims, Ryan (Principal Investigator)
The PNDC procured a test device to emulate electric vehicle loads and EV supply equipment. The device is capable of emulating common communication and control protocols and data, and also provides a means of exchanging electrical power flows with test devices. The device is deployed alongside the PNDC’s existing power network assets and be used in a variety of future R&D and test projects, including smart charging studies, integration and compliance testing, V2G/V2X. The system supports the most common industry charging standards and is capable of future upgrades as updates occurs and new standards emerge.
01-Jan-2021 - 31-Jan-2022
EV Charge Point Management Software (CPMS)
Sims, Ryan (Principal Investigator)
The PNDC procured a PNDC software monitoring system to communicate, monitor and control EV charge point hardware for future research purposes.

DIGF-DIRF-05923
Ingram, Rory (Principal Investigator) Lynch, Robert (Co-investigator) McLaughlin, Graeme (Co-investigator) Sims, Ryan (Co-investigator)
09-Jan-2022 - 05-Jan-2022
CKRB-001, Infrastructure zero emission vehicles Connected Kerb, £145,666
Sims, Ryan (Principal Investigator) Babu, Anish (Co-investigator) Edmunds, Calum (Principal Investigator)
This UKRI, InnovateUK funded project was an industrial collaboration between Connected Kerb and the PNDC. The project investigated how connected data from EV charging infrastructure could be used to identify and classify faults, ultimately leading to improved uptime and reduced time to repair. This project was funded via InnovateUK with PNDC listed as a partner to Connected Kerbs lead bid.
01-Jan-2021 - 31-Jan-2022
ZYPH-001, Zhyphen_OZEV feasibility study, £93,627
Sims, Ryan (Principal Investigator) Downie, Allan (Co-investigator)
This project was funded by UKRI via Innovate UK. The project was a collaboration with Zyhpen/SunHarvester who has developed a battery and PV backed rapid EV charging solution to be deployed at rural grid locations. The PNDC supported Zyphen in the technoeconomic analysis and sizing of system components and the preparation for testing of the system before it was to de deployed at a trial site. PNDC was a supporting partner to Zyphen's bid and was awarded funding up to £93,627.
