AlumniThe Principal's Welcome

Strathclyde People 2018

A very warm welcome to the latest edition of Strathclyde People. We are always pleased to bring you news of the successes and achievements of our global community of Strathclyders, just as we are eager to keep you abreast of the developments at the University at large – so I hope you enjoy reading about them.

This year our estates investment continues apace and the transformation of our campus is becoming increasingly evident. Our new £31m Strathclyde Sport building opened its doors for the new academic year, providing a fantastic facility for sport, health and wellbeing.

On the sporting front, Strathclyde was well represented at the Commonwealth Games in Australia with student athletes experiencing considerable success: Civil Engineering student David McMath took the gold medal in double trap shooting, while Chemical Engineering student David Weir won bronze in gymnastics.

Work has also begun on our £60m Learning & Teaching building which sits at the heart of the campus and will bring all of our student-facing services together under one roof.

In a few short months our new district heating network will begin generating heat and power for the greater part of our campus, bringing environmental and cost benefits and helping us to achieve our sustainability goals.

We have also officially launched the Glasgow City Innovation District (between George Street and Ingram Street) with the Technology & Innovation Centre and Inovo building, which we now own, at its epicentre. This District will draw in innovative companies and researchers in key technological areas and support the wider Glasgow and Scottish economy, in tandem with the Manufacturing Innovation District based at Glasgow Airport.

I am also pleased to see colleagues at Strathclyde continue to gain recognition for their achievements: Professor Sir John Curtice was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for his unrivalled services to social sciences and politics, and we continue to win awards. We also had Professor Dame Anne Glover join us this year. Anne is President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and is ex-Chief Scientific Adviser for both Scotland and the EU.

In The Guardian Higher Education Awards we won the Advancing Staff Equality award for the TRANSedu initiative, which seeks to ensure inclusivity for trans staff and students, and the award for Retention, Support and Student Outcomes was presented for our Strathclyde Cares initiative which works to welcome and support students with care experience through their university careers.

We were named Higher Education Institute of the Year in The Herald HE Awards, and also scooped prizes for Widening Access, Innovative Use of Technology for our Strathclyde App, and the Outstanding Contribution from a Student.

The success of Strathclyde is down to its people – our staff, students and our alumni. Your support, engagement and feedback helps us to provide the best possible experience for our learners.

On behalf of the entire University community, I’d like to thank you for your vital, ongoing support.
