12 September: message from the PrincipalPeriod of National Mourning

Dear colleagues,

Since the sad news of Her Majesty The Queen’s death reached us on Thursday of last week, the UK has entered a period of National Mourning. As a University, we remember The Queen with fondness and respect, reflecting on the many ways she supported us and recognised our collective work.

In the mourning period, up to the day of The Queen’s funeral on Monday 19 September, we will continue to work as normal. Teaching and assessment should continue and planned events may proceed. Nonetheless, organisers of individual events should consider if they are appropriate in a period of mourning.

Please note that the University will be closed on Monday 19 September as a mark of respect and to allow those who wish to follow the momentous events of that day to do so. Of course, some colleagues will need to be on campus to keep our students safe and our buildings secure and the University community is once again grateful for all of their efforts.

Please remember that, if you cannot take Monday off, you can opt to take another day or spread the hours throughout the week with the agreement of your line manager.

If you wish to express your condolences, Glasgow City Council has a public Book of Condolence available to sign in the City Chambers and the Royal Family has opened an online Book of Condolence as an alternative.

Finally, as this is Welcome Week I am sure you will all join me in welcoming our new and returning students to campus to begin the new session as we look forward to the year ahead.

Best wishes,
Jim
