PhD student gives presentation on chemical treatment of glass fibres at 2017 International Conference on Glass

Second year PhD student Sairah Bashir recently attended the 2017 International Conference on Glass in Prague, Czech Republic to present her research on regenerating the strength of thermally damaged glass fibres through chemical treatments. Sairah previously received both the RSC West of Scotland Local Section Travel Bursary and the SCI-RSC Rideal Travel Bursary to help fund her trip. Her research was well received at the conference and she hopes to use her experience to help her progress in her PhD:

Overall, I found that attending this conference was a very helpful experience as it gave me the opportunity to present my research to the glass science community and receive valuable feedback and advice on how to go forward. In addition this conference allowed me to improve on my presentation skills which will come in useful for when I attend future conferences and ultimately when I sit my viva.

Sairah is supervised by Dr Liu Yang and her research involves developing chemical treatments to regenerate strength of thermally damaged glass fibres. She has published a journal paper on this work, and a second paper has recently been submitted which follows up on research into glass fibre treatments.
