The journey to China

Hi I’m Kirsty! I’m a former pupil at Jordanhill and as I’m sure you’ll all know by now that I’m spending the next 10 months studying and living in Tianjin, China. I’ll be writing to you guys each month with updates and pictures and hopefully be getting some updates from you too!

Anyway, before I left I was struggling to think of what to take with me, I had to think of all the essentials I would need for getting started and what to pack for both summer and winter. Can you guys work out what essentials I decided on in Mandarin?

1. One of the most important things to remember was my  hùzhào so that I would be able to get on the plane!

2. Another essential was my 签证 qiānzhèng so that I could stay in the country for 10 months!

3. I remembered to pack my 牙刷 yáshuā so that my teeth could stay fresh!

4. I packed some British  chá so that I could continue to have my favourite drink whilst in China.

5. 1 also packed some 片 túpiàn of my friends and family to decorate my room with.

Before I left I was quite nervous but also very excited to get going! This is a picture of the Scottish scholars at the airport before we left. As you can see everyone was looking happy but also nervous!

We took two 7 hour flights to get to China, the first from Edinburgh to Qatar and the second from Qatar to Beijing. Does anyone know the distance from Scotland to China? The first thing I noticed when I got out of the airport was the heat! As you all know Scotland is very cold and wet most of the year so it was a nice surprise to be warm for a change! The second thing I noticed was how busy it was. Can anyone tell me the population of Tianjin? How big is it compared to Scotland’s population?

Once we had unpacked and settled in we went out to explore Tianjin for a bit. The city is beautiful and there are lots of different places to visit.  Here are some photos of the city. I feel like I’ve settled in well now and I’m getting used to the changes such as food and the busy city life. Classes at the uni have also started which I’m really enjoying, it’s difficult but I’m ready to work hard!

That’s all from me for this month but I’ll hopefully hear back from you guys and I’ll be writing my next blog for you next month. Bye for now!!
