Tell us a bit about your background please…
Ecuador is my home country, where I studied law. I have worked as a lawyer since 2009. I had the great opportunity to work in law firms where I was able to experience a diversity of cases as a corporative lawyer. After having this rewarding experience, I decided to challenge myself and become involved in a “slightly” different field which is environmental law.
What inspired you to further your studies?
My practice in law has always been the means to maintain accuracy regarding legal concerns in society. During my professional experience, I was involved in some projects which demanded an in-depth knowledge in environmental law. This interest was strongly nurtured by the occurrence of global environmental events that have been and continue to be addressed all around the world.
Why did you choose to study for the LLM Global Environmental Law & Governance?
My country has an incredible biodiversity and landscapes, including unique species particularly in the Yasuni National Park (Amazon Region) and in the Galapagos Islands. I was searching for an LLM that allows me to combine my curiosity regarding a different area of Law and the environmental challenges occurring in my country. I came to realize that the LLM in Global Environmental Law and Governance would be the best programme to fit my expectations. First, I will study environmental law from an international perspective, and second I will understand the different approaches to address and manage environmental matters. Finally, I have to mention that it was very interesting the possibility to share experiences in the Strathclyde Centre for Environmental Law & Governance.
What has been the highlight of your time at Strathclyde/highlight of the course so far?
The opportunity of meeting professors and researches in all fields within environmental law has been the most enlightening experience. All of them were open to share their professional experiences and were able to handle classes with the different backgrounds of international students.
Have you come across any challenges during your studies, and how have you overcome them?
I have taken my studies as a challenge due to all changes that come across: a different country, different language, and different cultures. In this process the access to environments within the university in which you can share your own experiences has been key to overcome difficulties.
What would be your advice for people considering taking this course?
Go ahead and do it. You always win!!! This is a great opportunity to meet a variety of perspectives from professionals coming from different countries.
What do you think of the support available (supervisors, tutors, professional services etc)?
The University of Strathclyde facilitates all means to fulfil my expectations, not only regarding the LLM but also in the experience of living in a different country. Professors and researchers are approachable and open to provide advice for better results in your studies. In addition, the university always provides access to professional services to improve your skills and prepare you to involve in new opportunities.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I am engaged in keeping learning what I have started and confident to take any opportunity to practice what I learned.
