About the Lindsay family

There were a number of well-established Lindsay families in Scotland by the 13th century. Genetically they are part of the I2a genetic group. This is rarer in Scotland than R1b, which probably accounts for at least 65% of the male population.

Our research conclusions are currently provisional, due to a lack of documented male line descendants who have taken a Y-DNA test. However, it is highly likely that SNP FT11343 indicates a probable descent from the early Lindsay families resident in Scotland.

A provisional conclusion that FT8747 indicates a likely descent from William Lindsay, 1st of Dowhill, is based on the fact that this SNP is carried by the current Baronet of Dowhill, but only shared with one of the numerous other Lindsays who have taken an advanced DNA test. If this SNP had been formed any earlier than William Lindsay, 1st of Dowhill, it is highly likely that at least some of these other test takers would share the SNP with the current Baronet.
