What you'll learn

This module is offered by the Centre for Lifelong Learning and will cover:

  • Outline the characteristics of different types of audiences in a work environment.
  • Plan and deliver effective forms of communication in the workplace.
  • Employ a range of appropriate vocal techniques to improve oral performance.
  • Critically evaluate communication performance in a range of workplace contexts.

Delivery

This course will be delivered face-to-face on campus at the University of Strathclyde. 

The 8-week intensive course will begin on Thursday 30 May until Thursday 1 August from 10.00am – 12.30pm each week. There will be therefore no classes w/c 24 June and w/c 1 July.

(Please note the class will run for 8 weeks over a 10 week period)

Assessment

This module will be assessed through:

  • Submission of a learning log demonstrating detailing the student’s contribution to class activities (approximately 500 words).
  • Class presentations on a range of prepared and improvised topics, which demonstrate effective planning, employ a range of vocal techniques, and clearly take account of the type of audience and workplace context.
  • Submission of a discussion (approximately 500 words) about communicating in the workplace and the process followed to prepare a final class presentation.

Who can apply?

This course is designed for participants who are eager to enter or re-enter the workforce with confident and effective communication skills. The programme works with participants to identify and boost their existing skills and equip them with the additional skills essential for effective workplace interactions. Through tailored coaching sessions, participants learn to articulate their ideas, engage actively in team dynamics, and navigate workplace settings with ease.

Our communication course aims to increase workforce participation, providing practical tools to maximise employment opportunities, reduce economic inactivity, and support career progression. Our inclusive approach ensures that a wide range of participants receive the necessary support to initiate, sustain, and excel in their communications in the workforce.

Fully funded places are available for this module supported by the Scottish Government and the Scottish Funding Council. 

What will I get at the end of it?

This course is worth 10 credits at SCQF Level 7. You'll receive a formal University Continuing Professional Development (CPD) certificate when you complete the module.
