Equality & DiversityCall it Racism Awareness Campaign

From March through to May 2024 the University of Strathclyde is running an anti-racism campaign, across its communications channels, to raise awareness of our zero tolerance approach to racism and racist behaviours.

The campaign visuals are based on AdvanceHE materials aligned to the declaration endorsed by Strathclyde in 2020:

Racism exists on our campuses and in our society. Call it what it is and reject it in all its forms. We stand united against racism.

The campaign’s messaging especially highlights microaggressions – words and actions, however brief or unintentional, which convey a derogatory, prejudicial or hostile message to an individual which make them feel different, unwelcome or insulted.

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of Strathclyde, says: “As a University that seeks to lead on campus culture and behaviours, we are committed to tackling racism, achieving equality of opportunity in our learning, teaching, research and working environments and ensuring our campus is a welcoming and safe space where everyone can thrive. This is entirely aligned with our institutional Values and our ethos as a socially progressive University.”

The Race Equality Steering Group oversees work towards an inclusive, welcoming and equitable working and learning environment for Black, Asian and minority ethnic students and staff at Strathclyde.

All Strathclyders are encouraged to personally commit to being an anti-racist ally to challenge and, whether experiencing or witnessing unacceptable behaviours, to report concerns via Report & Support, Dignity & Respect Advisors or to your Department. If you require wellbeing support, you can contact the Disability & Wellbeing Service.
