Hello, my name is Eman Mshari. I am a pharmacist from Kuwait with a bachelor's degree from Kuwait University in Pharmacy. I have two and a half years of experience working as a pharmacist in a hospital setting in Kuwait. What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?
The rationale behind my decision to pursue a postgraduate degree was driven by a deep desire to investigate further in the field of pharmacology, which I firmly believe acts as the base for effective disease management. A postgraduate degree will allow me to expand my perspectives, delve deep into comprehensive research, and address drug-related challenges. As a bachelor's degree offers a foundational understanding of basic concepts, my work experience has shown me the significance of pursuing additional studies. Working in clinical settings exposed me to the challenges and limitations, emphasising the need for in-depth research to address obstacles within the field. My goal is to make significant contributions that improve patient outcomes and enhance advances within the field.
How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?
After thorough research and evaluating courses in several universities in the United Kingdom, I enrolled at the University of Strathclyde due to its comprehensive MSc Advanced Pharmacology course that aligns with my academic and professional objectives. The programme met my educational needs with various modules and research opportunities. The unique combination of broad and specialised offers convinced me that Strathclyde would provide the optimal foundation to accomplish my academic objectives and enhance my career.
What did you like about your course and Strathclyde?
While studying at Strathclyde, I learned in an engaging educational setting with great experiences and learning opportunities. The curriculum included a variety of modules, each having distinct and substantial importance. The coursework greatly enhanced my understanding of current developments in clinical pharmacology and provided me with essential laboratory skills. A key component of my academic journey was my dissertation, which acted as a critical starting point in academic research, with the valuable guidance and encouragement provided by my supervisor, whose mentorship played a pivotal role in my success. One of the best things I experienced at Strathclyde is the supportive community, comprising of dedicated lecturers and professors. The kindness and support provided by the university staff, especially as an overseas student, created a feeling of confidence and genuine support throughout my academic year.
What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?
The course gave me a comprehensive understanding of clinical pharmacology and advances in new drugs, alongside significantly enhancing my laboratory skills. I gained skills in various laboratory assay methods, such as gel electrophoresis, immunoblot analysis, MTT Assay, ELISA, immunofluorescence, and PCR. I chose drug discovery as my elective module, which provided me with practical skills in drug discovery assays in academic and industrial settings. In addition to the taught material, the course helped me become a better researcher. I have acquired the necessary skills for conducting research, including experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation, which are all fundamental components in this field.
What's your favourite thing about Glasgow?
One of the most beautiful things I love about Glasgow is the beauty of the River Clyde. The long walks by the river during sunset were my source of peace and serenity. The variety of parks in the city is so beautiful and I used to enjoy nature during my weekend walks. Among the most remarkable features was the kindness and friendliness shown by the people in Glasgow. Although it was super cold in the winter, the cold breeze had its unique beauty in Glasgow.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?
Based on my personal experience at Strathclyde, it is vital to enjoy the program thoroughly. I highly suggest contributing to academic discussions, communicating with people from different fields and cultures, and utilizing the wide range of available scholarly resources. I highly recommend establishing professional relationships with professors and seeking opportunities for multidisciplinary learning. It is crucial to maintain a balance between your studies and personal life.
