Advanced Physics (MSc)Nizar Lethif

After working as a software engineer in India, Nizar took the leap to pursue his dream of studying Physics and came to Strathclyde. Here he talks what it's like being a student on our MSc Advanced Physics...

What were your reasons for taking on the MSc Advanced Physics at Strathclyde?

I was fascinated by physics, especially quantum mechanics during my undergraduate degree in Information Technology. After my degree, I joined the industry as a software engineer, but I had always wanted to learn physics at some point in the future.

When quantum computing started to gain traction in the industry, I realised that this would be the best time to pursue my dream of studying physics. And if I combined this with my expertise in software engineering, then I could build a career in quantum computing. As it is still an emerging field, I wanted to make sure the university had a strong physics programme. Strathclyde checked both the conditions for this (in addition to being located in a vibrant and friendly city).

What did you like about your course and Strathclyde?

The lecturers were really good at explaining complicated subject matter and the courses were well-designed, providing a good balance between depth and breadth of information. All the staff at Strathclyde were very helpful, especially with the challenges and uncertainties due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?

I developed a solid understanding of quantum information and computation which was my primary objective for taking this course. I also now have a better understanding of the workings of laser and light-atom interaction.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

I want to pursue a career in quantum computing. My time at Strathclyde helped me with the understanding and knowledge required to achieve my goals, as well as providing me with the opportunity to work with some leading researchers in the area of quantum computing.

How have you found your time living in Glasgow and what's your favourite thing about the city?

Glasgow is an amazing city to live in, with the many parks offering greenery and a great place to relax, the architecture mixing the old and new, great hiking places in and around the city, and an excellent network of public transportation. My favourite thing about the city are the parks and the walking paths along the river Clyde.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study in Glasgow at Strathclyde?

Strathclyde has some amazing staff and students from all over the world. You will definitely have a great time here.
