MSc Business & ManagementClare Broadhurst

What were you doing before the MSc?

Before starting my Masters degree I completed my undergraduate degree at Strathclyde in History and Social Policy.

What made you take the programme? Why did you choose Strathclyde?

I chose to complete this Masters degree because I wanted to develop my base knowledge in multiple different aspects of business and management. I felt this would be more beneficial for me in my future career prospects. I really enjoyed doing my undergraduate at Strathclyde, it felt right to continue my time here. Being a part of two different departments in the University was a great experience.

What has been your experience of the course?

The variety of classes on offer as part of the MSc Business & Management is very different from many other courses. I believe it gives a well-rounded knowledge of business, all of which is very practical and easily adaptable to be used in future careers. I have developed my interpersonal skills throughout this course by being able to communicate with others better, whilst also developing my skills in leadership. The Professional Management Practice module really pushed me to think of what avenues I want my career to go in and how I could use this year whilst still at university to push myself out of my comfort zone and develop new skills.

How does the course fit into your longer aspirations for study/career in the future?

As part of the course we worked alongside a Glasgow-based soft drinks company, Rapscallion Soda, to create a marketing plan. Off the back of this, I secured a job with them on a part-time basis, which has now transitioned into my full-time job as I work towards a management position with them in operations and logistics. On a daily basis, I am using the knowledge and skills that I developed through my Masters degree.

Is there anything you would especially recommend about the course/classes?

I would really recommend using the course to grow your professional network. It is very much a course with people from all over the world, so use this to your advantage. I would also recommend doing the larger 60-credit final project as it allows for a much more in-depth piece of work that can be useful for future career aspirations.

What is it like to be a student at Strathclyde and in the city of Glasgow?

I have loved being a student at Strathclyde. The campus is so easily accessible with plenty of places to study from across the campus. All teaching staff have been wonderful and very knowledgeable. As I'm from Glasgow, it has been lovely to study in my own city and help show some of the international students around the city throughout the year. I do believe Glasgow is one of the best cities. I really enjoyed experiencing the city with international students as it even allowed me to discover new things about the city.

What advice would you give to prospective students?

My biggest piece of advice would be to get involved in the community of Strathclyde as much as you can. By that, I mean becoming a class representative, joining societies that interest you or in general being in some of the social areas and getting involved in whatever is going on - because there is always something happening!
