International Marketing (MSc)Carmela Peñalba-Aguirrezabalaga

My decision to study the MSc International Marketing came from my unforgettable Erasmus experience at the University of Strathclyde. Those five months spent both at the university and in the city of Glasgow were so wonderful that I decided to extend my visit.

All the courses I took allowed me to specialise in the marketing field, which I wanted to expand my knowledge and skills in. To top it off, I was one of the fortunate people granted the prestigious award from the Department of Marketing at Strathclyde Business School. Therefore, I was clearly destined and delighted to choose the MSc International Marketing at the University of Strathclyde.

I only have good things to say about this postgraduate degree. The whole year was perfectly organised, so that students could make the most of it. The classes I took were of great variety, from general key skills to more specific courses that deal with critical issues in the field of marketing. All of them had an international essence that reflected the current diversity in global marketing practices. The learning methods in all of them included discussions, case studies, role-playing exercises, videos, group competitions, as well as student-led presentations that encouraged us to interact and participate in fascinating debates. Another particularity was that all my classmates, now called “family” were from different parts of the globe that made my experience even more unique.

Of all the courses and activities that the programme offers, my favourite one was definitely Marketing Works, a group competition where we had to consult our client-company. Our team advised the Robert Burns World Federation with the direction of Professor Alexander, and we got the third prize of all the marketing MSc programmes. This experience allowed us to develop active listening, problem-solving, leadership, communication, presentation and team-work skills, as well as get to know Scottish culture in depth. Additionally, I must emphasise Professor Lacka’s class, Digital Marketing, which made my interest in digital marketing flourish, but above all my ambition to be a professor, which is what I am fighting for right now.

The truth is that having the MSc International Marketing, as well as the Erasmus experience at this university with an excellent reputation on my CV has opened the doors to the academic world, allowing me to start doing a PhD in marketing at Deusto Business School. Honestly, I would love to go back to the University of Strathclyde Business School classrooms, but from the lecturer’s perspective, to ensure that the students have as good an experience as I had.

Overall, it was a very intense year since the Master is very demanding.

The city of Glasgow and its atmosphere, my classmates, and the people I met, especially in the University residences, together with all the University staff, made that year magical and unforgettable.

Thus, if you are looking for a postgraduate in marketing of really high standard, at a prestigious university, demanding but friendly expert lecturers, you like having fun and meeting people from all over the world, Glasgow and the MSc International Marketing postgraduate are your next destinies!
