Applying for an annual parking permit

There is no dedicated parking for students on campus. We encourage you to choose a sustainable mode of transport if you can. If you need to drive please take a look at the Local Private Parking Operators page to view discounted parking options near our campus.

If you are an enrolled student and a Blue Badge holder, you will be able to park on campus free of charge. Please contact Disability & Wellbeing Service to request a permit and access card.

Students who live on campus should contact Accommodation Services who offer limited parking at Andrew Ure Hall.

Currently, annual permits are allocated via priority and an annual ballot. Staff can apply for annual permits via the car parking portal. Those who are unsuccessful at the ballot will be placed on the waiting list.

Please view the staff car parking page to see the current parking rates.

The new car parking system does not allow space sharing by default. If you don’t require 5-day a week permit, we recommend you book a day permit for the days you need to drive to campus. However, if the day permit option isn’t suitable for you and the person you’d like to share with, please get in touch.

When applying, you should select your first choice. However, please be aware that there’s no guarantee that if successful you will be allocated a space in your preferred car park. The location that you choose has no impact on your likelihood of being successful in the ballot.

Yes, staff are able to book single day permits for the Graham Hills External  and Rottenrow and Taylor Street car parks via the University car parking permit portal. The day parking section of this FAQ page provides more information regarding this.

Please also take a look at the Local Private Parking Operators page to view other parking options near our campus.

If you're a staff member, please email the Car Parking team at carparking@strath.ac.uk or call extension 2363 to discuss your requirements. If you wish to park in a University car park you must request a blue badge permit via the permit portal. You will be required to provide a photocopy of your Blue Badge together with vehicle details.

Students who hold a Blue Badge should contact Disability & Wellbeing Service to request a permit and access card.

Blue Badges must be visibly displayed in the vehicle at all times whilst parked on University property. Only Blue Badge holders may park in designated disabled bays.

Staff with an increased requirement to travel to the University campus by car may be allocated a parking space for a fixed period of time. An initial maximum period for this is 12 weeks. We may require evidence to support your application. This could be a letter from your GP, confirming that you have a temporary need to use a car to travel between your home and place of workAllocation of a space on these grounds will be at the discretion of the Car Parking team. Your permit will be charged at the standard staff car parking rate during the period of time for which it is required.

Under this category the following circumstances will be among those which will be considered:

  • temporary impairment to mobility following surgery
  • because of treatment (e.g. chemotherapy)
  • reduced mobility arising from the advanced stages of pregnancy
  • requests relating to sensitive matters and protected characteristics.

If you have a short term need to drive to campus arising from one of the above, you can apply for a temporary permit outwith the annual application window.

If you have submitted your permit application, contact the Parking Team via email at carparking@strath.ac.uk. Request that they reject the application so you can reapply for the correct permit type.

Yes. Please contact carparking@strath.ac.uk for a manual application form. If you submit your application outwith the application window, you will be added to the waiting list. You will then be offered a space as and when one becomes available.

New car parking management system: carparking.strath.ac.uk

The new car parking management system is now available for booking both day and annual permits. We will no longer be accepting applications via Pegasus.

  1. Go to the University of Strathclyde Permit Portal. Click “sign in” and log in using your Strathclyde email address as the username, and your normal DS password.
  2. If prompted, enter any missing details. Next, accept the terms and conditions and privacy policy, and click “update account” on the top right corner.

Visitor parking

There is a very limited number of spaces reserved for visitors attending the University for:
  • a meeting with a member of staff
  • teaching
  • attending a meeting of Court.

Please note that visitors cannot book these themselves; Departments will need to request a booking on your behalf. Your booking will be charged at the current pay as you go rate.

For additional parking, our Campus map shows the location of nearby non-University car parks.

Please see the Visitor and Contractor page.

Accessing and using the car parks

If your card has expired or been damaged, please contact Staff Cards at staffcards@strath.ac.uk who will be able to update or replace your card.

Possession of a valid permit does not guarantee a parking space. It gives the holder the right to access and look for a space in their designated car park. The University has taken measures to limit the ratio of permits to available parking bays to give staff a better chance of getting parked on site.

Additionally, with staff working in an agile manner there are certain days where car parks are much quieter than others.

If you wish to leave your car in the car park for two or more consecutive nights, please contact Security Control. Please note that permits do not automatically entitle the holder to park overnight.

Permits are only valid for use on the John Anderson campus.

AFRC, NMIS and PNDC

Please contact each location directly via email:

AFRC and NMIS: nmis-enquiries@strath.ac.uk

PNDC: pndc@strath.ac.uk

Changing or cancelling my annual parking permit

Annual permits can be updated on the permit portal. For changes to day permits please contact carparking@strath.ac.uk. Failure to do this may result in a Parking Warning Notice being issued.

Staff may cancel an annual parking permit at any time. Deduction from salary will end with the next payroll.

If you'll no longer be working at the University, deduction from salary will end upon termination of your employment at the University. Parking permits are issued on the strict condition that they must be surrendered on the termination of the member of staff’s appointment.

Due to the high volume of staff on the waiting list each year, you cannot suspend your permit. You have the option of continuing to pay for your permit while on extended leave, which will guarantee its availability on your return. Alternatively, you can cancel your permit and join the waiting list on your return.

Electric vehicles

The University does not currently have staff or student EV charging on campus. The existing EV chargers on campus are for departmental vehicles or the shared electric pool cars for staff. There are nearby public chargers in the Duke Street car park and Collins Street car park that can be viewed on the Charge Place Scotland Map

Staff and visitor charging is available at AFRC and PNDC due to the lack of nearby chargers.

Requesting a day permit

You can book your permit up to two weeks in advance.

  1. Make sure you have your payment card handy before starting, as you will need this.
  2. Click the “request permit” tile on your dashboard. Select the permit type you need (“day”) and complete the vehicle details and other required details. Click “request permit” button in the bottom of the page. This will take you to a confirmation page.
  3. Check that the details on the confirmation page look correct, and then click “confirm.”
  4. Next, the payment page will appear displaying the amount you need to pay to secure your booking. Click “proceed to payment”, enter your payment details and click “pay now”.
  5. If your payment is successful, you will then be directed to a “payment successful” screen.
  6. You will receive a confirmation email and will be able to view your day passes under “my permits”.

If the “request permit” button is greyed out and you cannot proceed, you need to check the application form as something will have been missed. When all required details have been entered into the form you will be able to submit. Be sure to check you have clicked 'get details' next to your vehicle registration input towards the top of the application. Also ensure that you have read and agreed to the two check boxes related to the Terms and Conditions and Declaration statement. This will then allow you to progress.

Bookings can be made up to two weeks in advance.

Currently, users access the Graham Hills External and Rottenrow and Taylor Street car parks with their staff cards. We need to activate staff cards in advance to grant user access. We are investigating alternatives to the current system, so this may change in the future.

This would be because the date is either fully booked or you can't book that date yet. Staff can currently book spaces up to two weeks in advance.

Staff are currently able to book up to two day passes per week (Monday to Friday).

The cost of a day permit is £3. This will rise to £4 from 1st August 2024.

Payment card details are required to take payment for day permits. Annual permit payment will continue to be taken via salary deduction.

Cancelling my day permit

You can cancel right up to the day before your booking without being charged. To minimise late cancellations, you cannot cancel on the same day as your booking.

Go to “my permits” to view your permits. You can also cancel your permit under this tab. Simply select the permit you want to cancel and click the red “cancel permit” button. The permit will now appear cancelled on your “my permits” page and you will be refunded. You will also receive a confirmation email. Bookings cancelled on the same day as your booking cannot be refunded.

My vehicles (day permits)

Use the “my vehicles” tab. You can store up to 10 vehicles under your account.

Each permit can have up to two vehicle registrations assigned to it at any given time. The permit can be moved between these vehicles. The car that is on site must have a permit active. This is to prevent fraudulent use of the permits and to prevent more than one car being used on site at any given time.

You may register additional vehicles on the system via the “My Vehicles” button on the dashboard, and update your permit to use any of these vehicles. However, each permit can have up to a maximum of two vehicles “active” at any given time.

Graham Hills External and Rottenrow and Taylor Street car parks (day permits)

Access to the car park will be controlled via your staff card so please ensure that you possess a current card.

There is no limit to this. Your booking allows you to make multiple entries and exits during the period of your booking. You can leave and return if you need to.

Currently 70 spaces per day are available in the Graham Hills External car park. Our aim is to increase this in the near future.

The numbering is primarily used to report any maintenance issues. As long as you have a valid day permit, you can park in any available bay.

Weekend parking

If you require out of hours/weekend parking, please contact the Car Parking team directly on carparking@strath.ac.uk to discuss this.
