Computer & Information SciencesIndustrial placements

We offer a variety of placement/internship opportunities for our students within the Department of Computer & Information Sciences to allow you to gain valuable industry experience.

Formal placements

For some of our courses, you need to complete an industrial placement to complete your degree.

MEng Computer Science

You'll undertake a summer placement between either your 3rd and 4th years, or 4th and 5th years (or both if you wish). Placements should last approximately 12 weeks.

BSc Software Engineering

Software Engineering students also need to undertake a 12-months, mandatory placement between 3rd and 4th year to complete their degree.

MEng Computer & Electronic Systems

Similarly to the MEng Computer Science, you have the option to undertake a summer placement between either your 3rd and 4th years, or 4th and 5th years.

Informal placements

Students on other courses, primarily BSc Computer Science, BSc Business & Information Systems and BSc Computer Science with Law, often take summer work placemennts.

Employers take students from the end of 2nd year onwards. These placements are not assessed so there is more flexility with the duration and nature of the work.

Placement requirements

The aim of a placement is to allow you to gain experience of software development in an industrial context.

While you may not be involved in frontline software development of a flagship project, you'll be employed to assist in:

  • testing
  • maintenance
  • general systems support
  • provide a resource to work on projects
  • develop parts of systems that the organisation has been unable to support

After your placement, you'll document your experience in the form of a report or presentation. You'll report on the employer, the projects your worked on, and what you learned from the experience.
