Projects
- How can a university presence help peripheral and disadvantaged places? The potentials and challenges for universities’ civic mission through branch or distributed campuses
- Clelland, David (Principal Investigator) Fonseca, Liliana (Co-investigator)
- Universities increasingly seek to demonstrate their role as 'civic' institutions and links with their localities, promoted in the UK through Civic University Agreements with local partners. However, this agenda has neglected the multi-locational nature of many higher education institutions, and the presence of branch or
distributed campuses often in peripheral or disadvantaged regions. While these campuses are frequently justified as drivers of regional development, there is little evidence on their tangible impacts, or the specific challenges and opportunities they face in fostering civic engagement. This project critically examines UK
universities' domestic branch campuses in their contribution to the socio-economic development of their localities, drawing on qualitative case studies - using policy analysis, in-depth interviews, and collaborative knowledge exchange with policymakers, universities and regional partners. The research will identify
actionable evidence-based recommendations to inform both policy and institutional practices, enhancing the potential of branch campuses to maximize local development outcomes. - 02-Jan-2025 - 29-Jan-2026
- ESRC IAA 2024: Delivering Just Transitions in Europe: The role of corporate leadership
- Fonseca, Liliana (Fellow) Corbett, Hannah (Researcher) Bachtler, John (Principal Investigator)
- This project aims to translate Strathclyde’s socio-economic and public policy research outputs into impactful actions. It explores corporate leadership’s role in driving innovation for Net Zero and Just Transition ambitions, sharing learning on Michelin’s innovative model for local industrial low-carbon transformation. The project is underpinned by research undertaken as part of the Net Zero Industrial Cluster Exchange (NICE) network managed by EPRC and established in 2021 with support from Scottish Government and Michelin.

- Innovation Strategies for System Level Transformation: Exploring How to Implement Innovation Policies to Drive Regional Transformation
- Smith, Madeline (Principal Investigator) Johnson, Michael (Co-investigator) Fonseca, Liliana (Co-investigator) Downes, Ruth (CoI) Mendez, Carlos (CoPI)
- Scottish Universities Insight Institute-funded project on innovation strategies for system-level transformation.
Key challenges in achieving transformation through Innovation Policies are:
Design – how do we correctly identify what we need to do?
Mobilisation – how do we engage and start?
Implementation – how do we best deliver?
Evidencing success – how do we show the impact of our interventions?
Through a participatory design-led process, this programme explored these key challenges, providing a platform for sharing experience and learning with regional, national and international partners. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to guide Scotland in the effective delivery of our National Innovation Strategy to maximise its impact and drive long-term transformation. - 01-Jan-2024 - 01-Jan-2024
