Personal statement

I am a materials engineer whose research centres on advanced materials and structures for renewable energy and marine engineering. My work combines innovative manufacturing processes, particularly additive manufacturing and friction stir processing, with smart and multifunctional materials to address emerging challenges across the offshore energy lifecycle, from design and operation through to maintenance, remanufacturing and decommissioning. Central themes in my research include structural integrity and failure analysis, structural health monitoring, and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to material and structural optimisation and predictive maintenance.

My research foundations were built across leading international institutions. At IMDEA Materials Institute in Madrid, I investigated the high-temperature mechanical behaviour of metal/ceramic nanolaminate composites using advanced nanomechanical techniques. At the Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials in Düsseldorf, my postdoctoral work focused on iron aluminide alloys and their processing through additive manufacturing and laser metal deposition. At Cranfield University, I extended this expertise towards materials for renewable energy applications.

These experiences shaped a research profile spanning fundamental insight and applied engineering solutions, supported by an international collaborative network and a sustained record of high-impact publications in advanced manufacturing and materials for the energy and marine sectors.
