Project overview

This project supports the running and development of Hidden Voices, a student-led network for students and graduates who have worked in prison (or a related area), or who have experience of imprisonment. The purpose of the network is to develop students’ knowledge of imprisonment and the impact on the family; to allow students the opportunity to attend and contribute to external events to share their knowledge; and to run their own events to extend the reach of the project. In doing so, the project seeks to transform the education, opportunities and lived experience of those affected by imprisonment.

Children, young people and families affected by imprisonment can experience disrupted education, family breakdown, stigma and shame as a result. The experiences of the children and their families are often not understood by the people who work with them, including teachers, and this can lead to an increase in the issues faced. Hidden Voices is an opportunity for students to work collaboratively with those affected to develop their knowledge and understanding. The principal focus of the network is supporting adults who work with children in a range of settings to understand the experience, needs and rights of those affected.

What will students be doing

Students will work to develop and facilitate the Hidden Voices network and gain an understanding of the challenges those affected by imprisonment face. They will organise events to widen the network’s reach and use the network to inform their own professional development as well as that of adults who work with children and families affected by imprisonment.

Students with experience of imprisonment are also invited to share their experiences and help develop the knowledge of the network.

Students can attend the network from Year 2 where they have completed an appropriate placement. Students who want to take on a more demanding leadership role can do this in their fourth year and it is in this year that students can register for the assessed credit-bearing VIP4SD module.
