MSc Actuarial ScienceEllie Dever

Ellie Dever is a Scottish student currently pursuing an MSc in Actuarial Science at the University of Strathclyde.

A former mathematics teacher and a proud Strathclyde undergraduate alumna, Ellie was eager to return to the university to continue her academic journey through postgraduate study.

What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?

After a few years in the classroom, I realised I wanted a new challenge where I could apply my love for mathematics differently. The actuarial profession really appealed to me for its problem-solving nature, strong career prospects, and the opportunity to work in financial services. Postgraduate study felt like the right next step to make that transition, and I do not regret it one bit!

How did you decide to study at Strathclyde?

Choosing to come back to Strathclyde was a very natural decision. I had a brilliant experience here as an undergraduate - the teaching was excellent, the staff were supportive, and I felt part of a strong academic community. I knew the MSc Actuarial Science was well-regarded and that I'd be in good hands.

What do you like about your course and Strathclyde?

The course itself has been intense at times, but incredibly rewarding. I love how applied and student-focused it is. The modules are directly aligned with the professional actuarial exams, which gives me real confidence that I’m preparing for the next stage, and they’re also flexible in semester two, so everyone can tailor their degree to their strengths and interests. The lecturers are not only knowledgeable, but also very approachable - they genuinely want us to succeed.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills have you developed whilst studying the course?

Throughout the course, I’ve developed specialist knowledge in areas like risk theory, stochastic processes, and financial modelling, as well as practical skills in programming using RStudio and Python, and data analysis. I also feel much more confident presenting complex ideas clearly, which will be crucial in a professional setting.

What are your ambitions for the future, and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

My goal is to become a qualified actuary working in pensions or insurance, and this course has given me both the technical foundation and the professional mindset to take that path. The strong links Strathclyde has with the industry are also really helpful - there are regular career talks and networking events that give you a real insight into the field.

How have you found your time living in Glasgow, and what's your favourite thing about the city?

Studying in Glasgow has been a joy. I live in Paisley, so it’s just a 10-minute train ride for me. Glasgow is such a friendly, vibrant city with a great mix of culture, green space, and nightlife. My favourite thing is probably how walkable everything is - you’re never far from a good coffee shop, a park, or some live music!

Have you managed to explore anywhere outside of Glasgow?

I've also had the chance to explore further afield - the Highlands, Loch Lomond, and the Ayrshire coast (to name just a few) are all within easy reach for a weekend trip, and they're all absolutely stunning. The transport links from the centre of Glasgow and surrounding areas are fabulous, nothing is out of reach!

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study in Glasgow at Strathclyde?

To anyone thinking of studying at Strathclyde in Glasgow - go for it! You’ll get a high-quality education in a city that’s welcoming, bursting with life, and full of character. For me, coming back here has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.
