MSc Forensic ScienceChong Woon Hui Crystal
Give a brief introduction of yourself
My name is Crystal. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science, where I developed a foundation in human biology, and later pursued an MSc in Forensic Science at the University of Strathclyde. I have always been interested in crime scene investigation and forensic biology.

How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?
I had always planned to pursue a degree in forensic science, so I began researching universities that offer forensic science programmes. I discovered the University of Strathclyde through the Complete University Guide Subject League Table, where it ranked first for forensic science. This prompted me to look further into the course structure and content. I was impressed with the combination of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical including the opportunities to enhance my laboratory skills, participate in crime scene exercise, and give evidence in a mock court trial. These made Strathclyde a clear choice for me.
What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?
During my time studying, I learned how to communicate effectively in both theoretical and practical settings, which enhanced my ability to convey information clearly and collaborate efficiently within a team. I also learned the importance of advanced planning and task prioritisation, which are essential when working under tight deadlines. Additionally, I developed knowledge of the role of a forensic scientist and gained hands-on experience with a range of laboratory techniques.
How have you found your time living in Glasgow and what's your favourite thing about the city?
I’ve enjoyed my time living in Glasgow. The people I’ve met here have been very friendly and welcoming which made settling in a new city much easier. Getting around the city is also very convenient which makes it easy to explore the city and even take day trips to the Highlands. My favourite thing about Glasgow is its green spaces, such as Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow Green and Pollok Country Park.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?
I would definitely recommend studying at Strathclyde if you’re interested in any of its courses. The staff are supportive and approachable, and the University provides a wide range of modern facilities and support services to help students. It’s also a great advantage that the campus is located in the heart of the city centre, with easy access to shops, supermarkets and public transports. There are plenty of clubs and events organised by the Strath Union all year round, which is a great way to meet new people and get involved in university life.
