MSc Forensic ScienceClaire Pace

Introduce yourself

My name is Claire, I’m from Malta and I recently completed my MSc in Forensic Science at the University of Strathclyde, graduating with a distinction.

What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?

Coming from an undergraduate background in chemistry, I’ve always been interested in having a career in a field surrounding analytical chemistry where I can apply the skills I’ve learned in a meaningful way. Forensic science provided the perfect opportunity to combine my scientific knowledge with real-world applications to assist the law via the analysis of evidence in scenes of crime, and make an impact.

How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?

Since Malta does not offer an MSc in Forensic Science, studying abroad was always a dream of mine. After applying to several UK universities, Strathclyde immediately stood out to me with its outstanding reputation of being one of the best universities in Scotland, and one of the best in the UK in this particular field. The course’s emphasis on hands-on experience, including practical work, a mock crime scene and a mock court exercise, as well as the option to specialise in forensic chemistry or biology, made it especially appealing. Overall, this course provided a perfect balance between theoretical knowledge and practical application which will most definitely be useful for my future career.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?

I continued to develop essential skills such as organisation, time management, communication and teamwork. Although the concept of independent study was highly emphasised, there was never a lack of support available from staff and peers, and in fact we were highly encouraged to ask whenever needed. Additionally, the practical components of the course undoubtedly enhance my laboratory and analytical skills where I managed to gain more confidence working in the lab.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

My main ambition is to become a forensic chemist. I’ve always love working in the lab, and my time at Strathclyde most certainly helped me strengthen and further develop my lab skills. The practical experience and exposure to a variety of analytical techniques gave me a strong foundation for a career in forensic analysis and chemical analysis in general, due to the technique’s widespread applicability. I feel confident that the skills and knowledge I have gained throughout the past year will help me achieve my career goals and contribute meaningfully to the field.

How have you found your time living in Glasgow and what's your favourite thing about the city?

Living in Glasgow for a year was truly one of the best experiences of my life. The people are incredibly friendly, and the city itself is so walkable and full of things to do for anyone and everyone. Going for a walk, in nearby parks and for a coffee in the countless nice cafes in the area was always my favourite thing to do. I’m very glad that I have made very good friends to experience the beauty of Glasgow with, which made the city feel like the definition of my home away from home.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?

Go for it and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! Starting a new course, especially as an international student, can feel daunting at first, but I can honestly say I have no regrets. Everyone at Strathclyde, from the lecturers, guest speakers, to the departmental staff, is so welcoming, supportive and genuinely want everyone to do well and to succeed both during the course and after. Moreover, the University offers a lot of opportunities, experiences and resources that not only enhance your academic journey but your personal growth and social life. Studying in Glasgow has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.
