Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Eimear McLaughlin. I am from Donegal in Ireland. I recently completed a Master’s Degree in Forensic Science at the University of Strathclyde. Before this, I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Bioanalytical Chemistry at University College Cork and a Bachelor of Science, specialising in Chemistry, at Maynooth University.

What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?
I have always been fascinated by the application of science within the justice system and its potential to make a real difference in society. After completing my first postgraduate qualification, I wanted to specialise further by combining my background in chemistry with my interest in criminal investigation. Pursuing a Masters degree in forensic science felt like a natural next step to deepen my analytical skills and gain practical experience relevant to a career in this field.
How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?
The University of Strathclyde’s strong reputation in forensic science and its long-standing accreditation by the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences were key factors in my decision. The course structure offered an ideal balance between theoretical study and practical application, with opportunities to take part in realistic crime scene exercises and laboratory-based analyses.
I was also drawn to the expertise of the teaching staff, many of whom have direct professional experience in forensic practice. Additionally, I was fortunate to be awarded a Faculty of Science Masters Scholarship, which made pursuing this degree more accessible and reaffirmed my decision to study at Strathclyde.
What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?
During my time at Strathclyde, I developed a wide range of technical and professional skills, including the use of analytical techniques such as GC-MS, FTIR, and microscopy, as well as evidence handling, crime scene examination, and interpretation. The practitioner lecture series was one of the highlights of the course, providing fascinating insight from professionals working across various forensic disciplines. I also particularly enjoyed the crime scene to court exercise, which offered a comprehensive overview of the forensic process.
Although I had initially been apprehensive about the court element, as public speaking is not my strength, it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences of the course, helping to build my confidence in public speaking and professional communication.
Throughout the programme, I have also grown in confidence and developed strong teamwork and leadership skills. The course encourages students to step outside their comfort zones in a supportive environment that fosters both academic and personal growth.
What are your ambitions for the future, and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?
My goal is to pursue a career within a forensic laboratory or crime scene investigation unit, contributing to the scientific analysis of evidence in criminal cases. The combination of practical training, analytical expertise, and problem-solving experience I gained at Strathclyde has provided me with a strong foundation to achieve this.
How have you found your time living in Glasgow and what's your favourite thing about the city?
I really enjoyed living in Glasgow. It is a vibrant and welcoming city with a strong sense of community. The University is ideally located, close to the main shopping streets and surrounded by a number of great cafes that are perfect for studying or taking breaks with classmates. There is always something happening in the city, from cultural events to live music, and it is easy to escape to the surrounding countryside to enjoy Scotland’s beautiful landscapes.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?
I would highly recommend studying at Strathclyde. The staff within the Forensic Science department are among the friendliest and most supportive I have ever encountered. It is clear that they genuinely care about their students’ success and overall experience. They are passionate about the course content and ensure that students take the time to rest and recharge during busy periods. Both the teaching and technical staff are outstanding and create an engaging and supportive learning environment.
Is there anything else you’d like to say?
