MSc Forensic ScienceHannah Nicklas

My name is Hannah, and I started the MSc Forensic Science when I was 22.  I completed my undergraduate degree in Forensic Science in Germany.

I enjoy spending time with friends and weightlifting. While living in Glasgow I discovered that I love hill walking and I really enjoyed going on trips to see more of the country.

What were your reasons for taking on a postgraduate degree?

I wanted to deepen the knowledge I already had in forensics and I wanted to have more specialised knowledge in forensic chemistry.

How did you make the decision to study at Strathclyde?

I went to a Masters fair in Germany and met a representative from Strathclyde. She told me about the programme and the University and afterwards I knew I wanted to go there. I researched some other forensic programmes in Scotland, but I felt like Glasgow and Strathclyde would be the perfect place for me.

What specialist knowledge/professional skills did you develop whilst studying the course?

I got a lot of hands-on experience in many different techniques and processes, starting with recovering evidence from a crime scene to actually analysing samples in the lab. It was also the first time I learnt to write a court report and how to present it. After the course, I feel like I know a lot more about what being a forensic scientist actually means and how many different jobs and factettes there are.

What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?

I’m planning on continuing my studies by doing a PhD. My time at Strathclyde, especially the final project, showed me that I´m really interested in researching and continuing to learn and discover. Being at Strathclyde also showed me to just go for what I want and believe in achieving my set goals.

How have you found your time living in Glasgow and what's your favourite thing about the city?

Glasgow is my favourite place I’ve lived in so far. The city is beautiful – in my opinion, it’s as beautiful when it rains as when the sun is shining. There are a lot of different activities in and around the city. I loved getting a cup of coffee with some friends and just going for a walk around Glasgow Green or the city. The highland cows in Pollok Park are a great way to get away for a short time, too.

What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?

I would say that it was the best decision I could have made regarding my Masters and that I’m sure anyone coming to Strathclyde would have a great time. The staff are very supportive and the campus is really nice as well, with everything you need just a short walk away.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Being at Strathclyde had a great part to play in me being the person I am right now. I loved living in Glasgow and studying there. It made me believe in who I am and will always be one of the greatest memories of my life. I made friends from many different places and I feel connected to them in a way I haven´t known before.
