PhD Pure & Applied ChemistryStefan Nicholson
Hi, I’m Stefan, I’m a PhD candidate in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde, and my PhD is researching cathodoluminescence for understanding perovskite solar cells. I completed my undergraduate at Strathclyde in MChem Chemistry, before heading out to industry and gained experience in lubrication sciences and corrosion.
Why did you choose Strathclyde for your postgraduate research study?
After having such a well-supported and enjoyable time at Strathclyde during my undergraduate degree, it felt naturally the right place to perform my postgraduate research. The facilities at Strathclyde are top-class, and the staff are super supportive to allow your research to flourish, with no roadblocks in the way of progress.
What is the nature of your research and what do you like about it?
My research focusses on perovskite materials for the next generation of solar cells. I love that my research is on the boundary between chemistry and physics, and I have a network that extends across both departments. It is also great to be able to contribute towards the 13th UN sustainability goal of climate action.
What’s the Strathclyde research community like?
The Strathclyde research community is a far-reaching group of unique individuals who support each other through the good and bad times during research. It’s particularly great that researchers are given mixed groups from different backgrounds at the start of your journey, to connect with people from other backgrounds and support each other.
What are the Strathclyde facilities like?
Strathclyde’s facilities are top class – many aspects of my research would never have been possible without access to the world-leading facilities we have here. In addition to the research equipment which is cutting edge, we also have great facilities to support an active and exciting student life, such as our amazing gym facility.
What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?
My ambition is to continue to make a difference – to forever strive to feed back to the science community, and in whatever way I can continue to support the next generation of students. I have a wonderful network at Strathclyde who I’m sure will help me continue to make a difference!
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study at Strathclyde?
Go for it! If you’re worried about coming, then reach out to our friendly unibuddies who will answer your questions. If you choose to come to Strathclyde, I’m sure you’ll never look back!
