Iliana, from Russia, is in her first year of studying Architecture at Strathclyde. Iliana came to Strathclyde after completing a Foundation course at Newcastle University, and Gymnasia in her home country. Here she tells us about her Strathlife...
I am an easy-going person, who loves travelling and meeting people. I am trying to move a lot while I am a student to get most of the experience of living in different countries.
What were your reasons for taking on the Architecture degree?
I have been drawing since my childhood. I am interested in both Math and aesthetics and I think Architecture is the best combination of these two fields.
What attracted you to study at Strathclyde?
Mostly I paid attention to the rankings and the number of exchange programmes that the University has. Strathclyde takes first place in Architecture in Scotland and fifth in the UK. I would like to expand my international experience and getting the opportunity to take part in an exchange programme interested me.
How was the application process?
As I was applying from the Foundation programme, I got some help from my tutors. In my opinion, the application process is well-structured and the support team is always there for a fast reply if you have any questions.
What do you like about your course and Strathclyde?
The programme and the tasks themselves. They guide you through the whole designing process which helps to create your own style. The course has developed my time management and self-discipline.
My favourite thing about Strathclyde is that there is an amazing social life and a lot of opportunities to meet people.
I also am happy to take part in different job fairs, which are organised by the University. This is a great opportunity to find internships.
What are your ambitions for the future and how do you think your time at Strathclyde will help you achieve your goals?
To be honest I do not have an exact plan. I wish to take advantage of the opportunities around, get a good job and enjoy life in general. Strathclyde is definitely a great place to share experiences with people and find connections, which might be useful in the future. Moreover, Strathclyde is a respected University and its graduates are valuable specialists in their field.
How have you found your time living in Glasgow?
There are nice places to see and I really like the centre especially in the evening. My favourite thing about Glasgow is its accessibility. You can take a plane from Edinburgh, which is one hour by train from Glasgow, and go to any city in Europe. Northern Ireland and England are also quite near.
What do you do to relax in your spare time? Are you part of any clubs with the Students' Association?
I am a part of Architecture society, and I really love what they are doing. I think if I did not work, I would definitely join another few societies because there is a huge variety. I also like spending time with friends or just to sit in one of the hundreds of cafes and draw.
Outside of Glasgow, I have been to some small towns around Glasgow (Peebles, Ayr, Paisley). I am going to Newcastle in two weeks to visit my friends. I have also managed to visit London, Durham and Manchester. Belfast is next in my must-visit list.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study in Glasgow at Strathclyde?
There is a lot of time for self-study so be prepared to work hard. Self-analysis and self-evaluation are primary in the UK.
Secondly, the social life here is amazing. The international atmosphere is on a high level, so it is easy to meet friends. People here are very friendly and helpful.

International, Social and Ambitious.
