BSc Hons Mathematics and Statistics – DonghuaJingchao Zhou

Jingchao is a graduate of the BSc Hons Mathematics and Statistics - Donghua programme and also a PhD candidate in Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde. Here, he tells us about his experience studying with Strathclyde...

Why did you choose to study at Strathclyde?

The University of Strathclyde and my alma mater, Donghua University, have built a solid partnership for over ten years. When I was just entering university, a Strathclyde graduate described to me his experience of studying and living at Strathclyde. I was deeply attracted by the positive learning atmosphere, diverse international teaching and beautiful campus environment of the University of Strathclyde, so I decided to study at Strathclyde.

What do you think about the University?

The University of Strathclyde is a world-class comprehensive research university with an excellent academic reputation, which provides us with a very comfortable learning environment. Our campus has the most modern gymnasium in Glasgow, Strathclyde Sport, the well-stocked Andersonian Library, and the Learning & Teaching Building which offers quiet, private study spaces. The professors and staff of Strathclyde are very friendly and have provided great help to my study and my life. In addition, I have broadened my horizons and increased my knowledge by communicating and learning with classmates from all over the world.

Why did you choose to study BSc Hons Mathematics and Statistics?

In the field of modern scientific research, to accurately and quantitatively consider problems and obtain a well-founded understanding of regularity, mathematics has become an essential foundation. The BSc Hons Mathematics & Statistics - Donghua programme had a wide variety of compulsory and elective modules for me to choose from. By studying these courses, I could get a solid theoretical foundation of mathematical statistics and apply the knowledge of mathematical statistics in professional application fields.

What did you like most about the BSc Hons Mathematics and Statistics?

What I liked most about this programme is that I have the opportunity to apply the theory to the real world. Not only did I learn mathematical and statistical theory from teachers in the classroom, but I also did summer projects with teachers outside of the classroom. In the summer project, the teacher instructed me to apply the knowledge learned in the class to the fields of finance and health, so that I have a more thorough understanding of theoretical knowledge.

What did you get out of it?

Through my study in Strathclyde, I systematically learned the basic theories, knowledge and skills of mathematics and statistics, and received relatively strict scientific thinking training. In the process of learning, I constantly improved my learning ability, logical thinking ability, reasoning ability and innovation ability. And I understand the new development prospects in the field of mathematical statistics.

What are your plans now that you have graduated?

I enjoyed the study and research environment at Strathclyde and would like to continue to improve my professional skills in mathematics. Therefore, after graduating, I chose to go on to complete my PhD in Mathematics under the guidance of Professor Mao at the University of Strathclyde.

What would you say to anyone considering coming to study at Strathclyde?

The University of Strathclyde is the best choice you will ever make and you will never regret it!
