My name is Jonathan Sneddon, I am 21 years old, and I have just graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a degree in Mathematics with Teaching. At school I had a great interest in mathematics, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time studying the subject at university.
Why Strathclyde
I visited the University at an open day, where I got to see for myself the campus, the area of Glasgow and the wonderful staff that work within the university, not only in the Mathematics and Statistics Department but the whole Faculty of Science. I also learnt about the great opportunities which are available at the University and the amazing facilities which are accessible to all.
I loved the flexibility of the combined degree course; it allowed me to get out on placement in my final year for 18 weeks and still get the full experience of the mathematics degree for my three years prior. Furthermore, I liked the great teaching staff and methods, which always make lectures and material very engaging but moreover, the support given with office hours for extra help and drop-in sessions for deeper understanding of material.
Reflecting on Strathclyde
Throughout my time at Strathclyde, I developed great people skills, where I was able to make great relationships with other students and through the great opportunities that the University provided, I was able to use these skills in practice for my future. Also, the provided placement option in my final year meant I got a taste of a classroom and what I can expect for my future, but with amazing support from the University throughout.
I am now going into my probation year within a secondary school to teach maths from S1 to S6. My time at Strathclyde has prepared me for this throughout my full degree and I look forward to a future in teaching.
To new students
You’re at a great university, just enjoy your time here as it’ll fly by. Try to meet people who are on your course, enjoy the great lectures and make the most of your time on campus and in Glasgow.
