Civil & Environmental EngineeringOedometer Cell

The oedometer cell is used for testing samples under saturated conditions (1-D compressibility, consolidation properties, hydraulic conductivity).

Description

This test determines the consolidation and compressibility properties of a soil specimen restrained laterally and subjected to a number of successive increments of vertical loads.

The oedometer consists of a rigid aluminium alloy frame and the lever arm has three hanger positions for 9:1, 10:1 and 11:1 ratio. Cell dimensions are 75mm diameter and 20mm height. Maximum direct load is 1kN corresponding to a maximum vertical total stress of 2.5 MPa.

Permeability attachments are also available allowing the saturated hydraulic conductivity to be using the oedometer cell.

Access arrangements

We can carry out consolidation, compressibility, and hydraulic conductivity tests on your samples and we can process the data to derive the consolidation and compressibility coefficients the saturated hydraulic conductivity.

We're keen to tailor experimental procedures to your needs. Access can be provided to individual researchers who wish to consolidate samples and/or perform permeability tests on their own upon proper technical and health & safety training.
