This second course in People Organisation and Leadership introduces you to best practices of engineering management, focusing on aspects surrounding teamworking, leadership challenges, motivation techniques, and organisational and communication challenges. We will examine the technological and organisational aspects that impact on the human resources of a firm when managing change. You will gain knowledge of key strategies to implement change efficiently through analytical approaches.

We would recommend that students complete the People, Organisation and Leadership: Problem Solving and Decision Making course before progressing onto this course if they are new to this area of expertise.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Leadership considerations and concerns
  • Leadership and motivation techniques using analytical approaches
  • Overview of the principles of organisational structure
  • The human element in organisations
  • Modern people management concepts and practices

Please note, the case studies analysed throughout the course are in an Engineering context.


We would recommend that this online course provides 4 weeks of learning material, at 10 hours a week.

You will also gain access to the course material for a full year, so that you can refer back to your notes or material after completing the course.

Online learning

This CPD course in People, Organisation and Leadership: Management is delivered entirely online, using MyPlace (Moodle) as the delivery vehicle. The course itself comprises of videos, articles, polls, discussions, tutorials, quizzes, activities which mirror the learning objectives of the residential course.

Dr Andy Wong

Course lead

Dr. Andy Wong is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management at the University of Strathclyde. He received a BEng degree in Industrial Engineering and MPhil and PhD degrees in Operations Research from the University of Hong Kong. He has published over 50 journal and conference papers in the area of Management Science/Operations Research/Soft Computing. At the moment, he is leading a number of research and KTP projects and acts as lead supervisor of 8 PhD/EngD students in a variety of management areas, including Human Resource Management.
