We have a very international feel to our Faculty, with almost 1000 international students from almost 90 countries currently studying with us. 

Our academics are also well represented from across the globe with 46% of our academic staff being international. 

PhD programmes are becoming very popular in the Faculty, in particular for international students.  One third of our current PhD students are overseas students.

Wherever you’re from, we can provide you with opportunities for a truly international experience. Through our strong links with partner universities world-wide, and student exchange programmes, there’s lots of options available.

Scholarships for international students

We offer a number of Faculty and Department scholarships to our international students. These are available for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students. Our Faculty of Engineering International Scholarships provide scholarships of up to £2,670 for undergraduate students, and up to £8,000 for postgraduate taught students.

English language requirements

IELTs is the most widely accepted English test

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your proficiency in English before starting your programme. We accept a number of English language tests as proof of proficiency in English, but the IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) exam is the most widely accepted.

Current IELTS requirements for undergraduate students is 6.0 and for postgraduate students is 6.5 overall with no individual band less than 5.5. Some departments accept IELTs 6.0 (minimum 5.5 in each element). Contact our Faculty Admissions and Conversion Team for further information. Other tests and grades may be acceptable to the University and you should visit the English language requirements page for advice on alternative English language tests.

Pre-Study English tuition

If your proficiency in English is not at the required level, the English Language Teaching (ELT) Department at Strathclyde runs programmes to help.

English language study during your programme

If you are an international student in a full-time degree programme and would like to work on your English language skills, you can benefit from free class tuition of up to four hours a week for as long as you are at Strathclyde.

University of Strathclyde International Study Centre

The International Study Centre offers international students on-campus degree preparation for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The pathway programmes will provide you with the necessary academic skills and English language tutoring to undertake a degree at the University of Strathclyde.
