English language requirements
We accept a number of English language tests as proof of proficiency in English. IELTS is the most widely available.
Our current standard requirements are:
- IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no individual band less than 5.5)
Some degree programmes have different English language requirements to the above so please check each individual course page for details.
Other English language tests may be acceptable and you should contact our Recruitment & International Office for advice on alternative English Language tests.
University preparation programmes
International students who do not meet the English language requirements have the option of studying undergraduate or postgraduate preparation programme at the University of Strathclyde International Study Centre. Upon successful completion, students will be able to progress to degree level study at Strathclyde.
Improve your English language level
We offer a number of English Language Teaching courses which let you improve our English language level with having to retake IELTS or another English language test.

Secure English language tests - update
The UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) authority has recently updated its guidelines on "Secure English Language Tests". As a result the types of English Language tests that we can accept as proof of English Language proficiency have changed. These changes will particualrly affect students wishing to study pre-sessional English Language courses at Strathclyde, but will also affect students entering academic programmes directly. Please contact the Recruitment & International Office for further guidance on acceptable tests under the new rules.
