A comprehensive 5-days module that aims to introduce delegates to the fundamentals and practical applications of risk management and reliability engineering. The lead tutor has run successfully the course for the past 8 years, having trained more than 400 graduate engineers and industry delegates, through a combination of delivery methods which combine theoretical lectures, practical sessions and group workshops. The course will be valuable to engineers and practitioners working across various fields of industry aiming to introduce relevant key concepts in their day-to-day activity.

Intended learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, delegates will:

  1. Develop a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of risk and reliability engineering, including both qualitative (FTA/ETA/RBD) and quantitative methods (FORM/MCS) as well as widely used industry standards
  2. Build practical skills on reliability assessment of components and complex engineering systems
  3. Appreciate the different options for risk control and develop suitable decision support frameworks
  4. Apply advanced reliability concepts (such as RCM, RBI, RAM) for the effective operational management of engineering assets
  5. Integrate various methods and concepts for the reliability assessment of real life engineering problems

Professor Athanasios Kolios

Professor Athanasios Kolios (Dip Eng, MSc, PhD, MBA, PGCAP, CEng MIMechE, FHEA) holds a Chair in Risk and Asset Management at the University of Strathclyde (UK) and is the Vice-President of the European Academy of Wind Energy. He is a qualified academic and consultant with expertise in asset integrity management. He has experience in the development and optimisation of both qualitative (ie FMECA, HAZOP) and quantitative (ie stochastic expansions, advanced statistics) methods for risk management and reliability engineering as well as integrated frameworks for the development of effective operational strategies (ie RCM). During his academic career he has participated in several projects related to the development, analysis and optimisation of energy systems through a portfolio of research council funded, industry sponsored and specialist consultancy projects. Professor Kolios is a Fellow Chartered Engineer of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and has chaired several sessions on the Risk and Integrity Management of Energy Assets.

 

Peyman Amirafshari is a research associate in asset integrity management (AIM) at the University of Strathclyde Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering (NAOME) department. He is an expert in fatigue and fracture integrity management and structural reliability assessment. Peyman is a member of the committee that develops and maintains BS7910 (UK flaw assessment procedure). He has experience in developing bespoke Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) frameworks, structural assessment, and integrity management of offshore platforms. During his PhD research, Peyman worked within TWI Ltd’s Risk and Reliability team where he led a project, funded by Lloyds Register, to develop an RBI framework for optimising NDT inspection of newbuilding ships.


 

Sofia is an EPSRC postdoctoral fellow at the University of Strathclyde. She completed her PhD at the Wind and Marine Energy Systems Centre for Doctoral Training. Her research focuses on data-driven diagnostic and prognostic techniques for wind turbines. She has developed an automated framework for condition monitoring data pre-processing, feature extraction, feature selection and failure prediction. Her methods have been validated using operational data from both onshore and offshore wind turbines, through collaboration with international industrial and academic partners. Sofia has also been involved in ROMEO H2020 project, in developing an offshore wind farm lifecycle assessment model. She’s also currently a Co-investigator in Miros KTP project which aims to build an integrated marine coordination decision support system software platform for offshore wind farms.
