Language Ambassadors Programme

Boost your recruitment in languages; invite a team of Strathclyde Language Ambassadors to your school!

The Language Ambassadors Programme aims to support schools through providing student role models to promote modern languages to young people, and encourage them to choose languages as part of their high school curriculum and higher education pathways.

As role models, the ambassadors will share their experiences and their successes; they will also be honest about the challenges they faced studying a modern language.

Information for schools

The Strathclyde Language Ambassadors programme provides support to schools through organising on-site visits from teams of two or three students from a variety of years and degrees. These range from French and Spanish, to Law and a Modern Language, and our master's degree in International Business and a Modern Language.

As a basic package, a team of Language Ambassadors will offer a presentation about the benefits of studying a foreign language followed by a Q&A session. The presentation will generally focus on the students' experiences as language learners, including living and working abroad as well as transitioning from high school to university.

Where possible, our students work with their former secondary school to provide pupils with role models they can easily relate to, through the familiarity of shared school experiences.

We will involve you in the planning stage to tailor the content and format to meet the needs of your learners.

Over recent years, our teams of Language Ambassadors have also contributed to a variety of events including:

  • Languages in Work Day
  • European Week of Languages series of events
  • Language Festival across a whole school
  • Off-site events such as a visit to a Spanish or French restaurant
  • Support towards events run by SCILT, such as the Espacios Increíbles competition, Language Linking, Global Thinking (LLGT) and the Digital Internship programme

Another key aim of the programme is to provide real-life experiences for our students, helping them to develop important and valuable skills such as presenting to an audience, self-reliance in a variety of situations, working as a team and in partnership with people from outside the university.

Information for Strathclyde students

Becoming a volunteer in the Language Ambassadors Programme is a rewarding experience that will set you apart from other graduates. In the process, you will also develop important and valuable skills such as presenting to an audience, self-reliance in a variety of situations, working as a team and in partnership with people from outside the university.

It is also an opportunity to have a positive impact on the educational experiences of young people, while gaining some in-school experience before your year abroad, or during your final year.

As an ambassador, you will take part in school visits, either online or in situ, working as part of a team of three or four other language students from different years and degrees. There is no minimum number of visits but we hope you will want to do more once you have tried!

You may even have the opportunity to speak to your former school to share your experiences with pupils who are at the stage of selecting their subjects for national qualifications.

We encourage you to be creative but will support you in developing resources for your visit. You'll also benefit from peer support in your teams.
